Living in Landover, MD

Landover was named after the town of Llandovery in Wales. Prince George’s County has a rich history dating back more than 10,000 years. Captain John Smith first sailed up the Potomac River in 1608, and over the next 25 years English traders explored the area for commerce and fighting. The new county flourished as residents left the confines of St. Mary’s City and created new settlements nearby. Families from all over Europe built new homes here with the help of indentured servants. A large tobacco industry generated wealth in Prince George’s County, allowing residents to build large plantations, educate their children and support the work of local religious leaders.

Prince George’s County did not experience extensive military action during the Revolutionary War, but the local landscape took a huge toll during the War of 1812. Although tobacco production remained the dominant contributor to the local economy, residents began to experiment with new crops, great machines and mass production. The area experienced a large population boom lasting almost a century, and by the late 20th century the landscape was very similar to what it is today. Local residents heed new changes but are constantly reminded of the past.
