One of the fasting-growing suburbs of Baltimore, Owings Mills had a 51.6 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010, according to the United States Census. As of 2010, the population was a little more than 30,000. Owings Mills was once a sprawling land settled by Samuel Owings in the early- to mid-1700s. A miller by trade, he built three mills to circumvent the nearby Gwynn's Falls, hence the name of the town. During the industrial revolution that swept the United States, Owings Mills became a popular mining area for flint, ore and gold.

Over time, Owings Mills grew as a northern suburb of the city of Baltimore and became a popular spot for residents because of its northernmost location on the Baltimore Metro Subway. Avid shoppers also matriculated to the area because of the popularity to Owings Mills Mall. With a lively small-town atmosphere, this neighborhood is highly residential and family-oriented. Although there are 30,000 people living in the suburb, the area still boasts more than 12,500 households.

Owings Mills Work and Study

Because Owings Mills is only 12 miles from the city of Baltimore, many corporations and businesses have made their home here, including a Solo Cup plant and a Black and Decker manufacturing facility. T. Rowe Price also holds one its headquarters here. According to the census, there are more than 3,600 firms in the Owings Mills community. With a recent spike in population growth and job opportunities becoming increasingly available, it makes sense that rentals in Owings Mills are becoming more in demand.

Although most area universities are located within the city of Baltimore, there is a local branch of the Community College of Baltimore County located here.
