Overview of Savage

Savage is a relatively small neighborhood located near Baltimore in Howard County. Located less than 20 miles from Baltimore and less than 25 minutes from Washington DC, it's home to many residents who work in one of those larger cities. Originally known as a mill town, many of its historic buildings are still open to the public or used by locals. Apartment renters choose this town because of its rich history and proximity to several major cities.

Living in Savage

Though officially founded in the 19th century, the earliest settlers arrived in the town in the 17th century. They built a number of local mills that produced different textiles used across the county. Named for one of the most successful mill owners, Savage developed a strong reputation because of those textile mills. Though few of the mills survived, the city remains devoted to showcasing its past.

Now home to around 7,000 people, the city ranks as one of the more popular neighborhoods for commuters. The city also has several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers homes for those looking to buy or rent.

The Historic Savage Mill is reportedly one of the most haunted places in Maryland, which makes it a popular attraction. Built in the 19th century, a group of developers helped save the mill from the chopping block and turned it into a mixed used facility. It now boasts a bakery, antique stores, craft stores and multiple restaurants. You can even take a ghost tour to learn about its haunted history.

Fans of history will also appreciate the Bollman Truss Railroad Bridge. Historical markets located in front of the bridge give you information about its history and usage. Take a walk across the bridge to enjoy the views of the water underneath.

When you rent a home here, you're also close to the great attractions in Baltimore such as the Baltimore Museum of Art. Though it does have a large collection of artwork created by artists living in Maryland and nearby states, it also has work from around the world. If you move to the area with kids, enroll your kids in different programs that teach them about famous artists and their works.

Apartment renters with an interest in marine life will want to visit the National Aquarium. With dozens of exhibits and thousands of animals, it might take several visits to see everything. The neighborhood surrounding the aquarium features a number of restaurants and shops that give you even more ways to spend a day.

Rest assured that you have ample ways to see the town and the neighboring cities when you live in Savage. Though some residents prefer driving their own cars, others rely on public transportation. Central Maryland Regional Transit offers stops in town.

Within a 30-minute drive from the city are four major colleges that include Laurel College Center, which has partnerships with other colleges that make it easy for students to transfer their credits. Other local colleges include Howard Community College, University of Maryland University College and Anne Arundel Community College.
