Upper Marlboro apartments for rent can put renters among an exclusive group of people. This small Maryland town has an estimated population of only 638 people as of July 2011, according to information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau. Upper Marlboro only encompasses 0.41 square miles, 4.65 percent of which consists of water.
The town is located in Prince George's County, sitting roughly 16 miles from the town of Alexandria and just over 16 miles from Washington in the northern part of Maryland. The town sits on the western branch of the Patuxent River, and in its earlier years, Upper Marlboro was a thriving port town. The main stem of the Patuxent River is what forms the east border of the county.
People living in Upper Marlboro apartments can take advantage of being in a town with a rich history. It is one of the oldest southern Maryland towns that dates back to the colonial period, originally settled in 1695. In fact, the town was named after the first Duke of Marlborough who was an ancestor of Winston Churchill. In 1706, the western branch of the Patuxent River was still navigable and Upper Marlboro was established for the main reason of transporting tobacco products.
In 1721, Upper Marlboro became the county seat of Prince George's County and has remained so ever since. With a downtown district and a main residential area, this small town has a surprising amount of variety to offer its residents.
Upper Marlboro apartments for rent could be attractive options for businessmen working out of this small community. The downtown area sits along Main Street and a variety of local businesses can be found here, as well as the Prince George's County Courthouse and the County Administration Building. The Town of Upper Marlboro website revealed that additional businesses and government offices can be found in the Old Mill complex, which is only a short distance from the downtown area.
Given the town's small area, there are no colleges or universities located within Upper Marlboro. However, students can take advantage of the nearby Prince George's Community College. PGCC maintains that it is the no. 1 choice for an undergraduate education among county residents and enrolls more than 40,000 students from around the world.
According to data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, Upper Marlboro rentals have a vacancy rate of 14.3 percent and median rent was $1,275 as of 2010. It might not come as much of a surprise to learn that the census also revealed that there were only 60 occupied units paying rent in 2010. Nearly 50 percent of those renters fall in the gross rent range of $1,000 to $1,499. The data further revealed that the highest percentage of renters, 35 percent, reported spending 20 to 24.9 percent of their total household income on gross rental costs.
City-Data information revealed that in March 2012, the cost of living in Upper Marlboro was assigned a value of 133.1 points, which is 33.1 percent higher than the national average.
Despite the town's small space, people living in Upper Marlboro apartments have a number of area attractions to take advantage of, including the Mariton Golf Club, Darnall's Chance House Museum and a Six Flags Great America facility in the nearby city of Annapolis.
Marlton Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course that many locals enjoy for a fun but challenging day on the links. Darnall's Chance House Museum officially opened to the public in 1988. With a special focus on mid-18th century women, the museum is dedicated to the study of the history and culture of 18th century Prince George's County. Many visitors enjoy learning about the town's past and getting an inside look into the widow - who went by the name Lettice Wardrop Thomson Sim - who lived here before the American Revolution.
