Nestled between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Wheaton is a great place to live. The city combines the best of local Maryland flair and the professional atmosphere of the nation’s capital. Family-friendly downtown Wheaton features specialty shops and award-winning restaurants that cater to the city’s diverse, eclectic population of more than 48,000 residents. Look for Wheaton apartments for rent, and experience the city that’s in the center of it all.
The city was named after Union General Frank Wheaton, who defended Fort Stevens and Washington, D.C., during the Civil War. European settlers inhabited the area during the 18th century and used the land for farming. Federal government workers flocked to Wheaton in the years after World War II, causing the population to double in ten years. Like other towns in the county, Wheaton’s identity became synonymous with the larger Silver Springs zip code nearby in the middle of the 20th century. However, local residents wished to have a unique identity and petitioned to have their own designated zip code.
Today Wheaton is undergoing a redevelopment effort with major business growth on the horizon. With famous botanical gardens, large shopping centers and outdoor events, the city has a lot to offer to residents who live in Wheaton rentals.
Montgomery College, Rockville, may be the only school in town, but Wheaton is centrally located for some of the northeast’s finest colleges. The University of Maryland, the largest university in the area, is 11 miles away in College Park and offers students the best features of a large, spirited university. Washington, D.C., is also a hub for higher education, with American University, George Washington University, Howard University, Georgetown University, Gallaudet University and the University of the District of Columbia, among others, just 12 miles away from downtown Wheaton.
With a close proximity to Washington, D.C., many Wheaton residents work for the government, including such agencies as the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration. The city is also home to the headquarters of Fannie Mae, Danaher and Pepco Holdings, which all made the Fortune 500 list in 2012. Washington, D.C., also offers many blue collar jobs to help support tourism and other booming industries in the area. With a close proximity to business opportunities all over the professional spectrum, apartments in Wheaton are very popular.
There are many attractive aspects of the northeastern lifestyle, which unfortunately drives rent prices up in Wheaton. United States Census Bureau statistics indicate that the standard apartment here costs $1,448 a month, which is nearly $600 more than the national average rate.
Although rent prices here are expensive, Wheaton’s cost of living index score is only slightly above that found in the average American city. Residents here stay around for the local attractions and family-friendly environment, and see the incentives of living in Wheaton apartments as being well worth the price.
The atmosphere in Wheaton can get very lively, as the city hosts a number of festivals to showcase local flair with the Wheaton Outdoor Market, Salvadoran-American Day Festival, TGIF Summer Concert series, Taste of Wheaton and the World of Montgomery Festival. Wheaton residents also attend University of Maryland sporting events and student performances put on throughout the year.
Washington, D.C., is also the site of some of the country’s most famous historical attractions that bring in millions of visitors. The city is home to the Washington, DC International Film Festival, the Del Ray Affair, Great Grapes Wine, Arts & Food Festival, Manassas Latino Festival and VegFest DC, among others, which bring excitement and international culture to the area.
