The region that includes Beverly was given to English settlers by an Indian chief in exchange for protection against their rivals. In 1626, a group of settlers arrived in nearby Salem because of the ideal climate, but after having difficulty finding an area to settle in much of the group thought about giving up. The leader of the pack, Roger Conant, encouraged the group to stay there and in 1630, he and a few others founded the first permanent settlement. This area later became Beverly and was given complete independence from Salem in 1630.

In 1781, the John Cabot House was one of the first Federalist-style mansions that would be built in the area. Over the next century, Beverly went through a long span of economic and industrial development, including the construction of the country’s first cotton manufactory, the opening of the Beverly-Salem Bridge and the incorporation of the Beverly National Bank.
