In 1781, the John Cabot House was one of the first Federalist-style mansions that would be built in the area. Over the next century, Beverly went through a long span of economic and industrial development, including the construction of the country’s first cotton manufactory, the opening of the Beverly-Salem Bridge and the incorporation of the Beverly National Bank. By 1894, Beverly officially became a city.

Some of the top employers in the area include American Renal Holdings., Electric Insurance Co., Orchard Brands, Boston Chauffeur, Communications and Power Ind and Endicott College. In Essex County, the top employers include Alcatel-Lucent, MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Caritas Holy Family Hospital.

Many residents and visitors also enjoy whale watching at Atlantic Yankee Whale Watching & Deep Sea Fishing.

In downtown Beverly, the annual Arts Fest Beverly is a project of the Beverly Main Streets that features more than 100 artist booths, 50 artists in open studios and a vast variety of art. Many other community events are centered on the prosperous artistic environment of downtown.
