Overview of Chinatown

As one of the oldest surviving Chinese areas in New England, Boston’s Chinatown district is bursting with vibrant culture, authentic food, and friendly people. And while most people tend to think of Chinatown as an attraction or a place to visit, it actually happens to be a great neighborhood to live in. Sure you might have to dodge and dash your way through the occasional crowd of tourists, but that’s a small price to pay for all the benefits you receive in return. If reasonable rent, easy access to public transit, and a unique community are things that peak your interest, Chinatown may just be the perfect neighborhood to call home.

Chinatown Apartments & Cost

Because Chinatown is so close to Downtown Boston, rental prices here are pretty similar to the nearby neighborhoods. And while lots of architecture in Chinatown has an Oriental theme, most of our Chinatown Boston apartments are located in modern high-rises. These luxurious homes range from about $2,500 to $3,800 per month depending on your preferences. Honestly, this area is probably not an ideal location in terms of living for larger families because a majority of apartments have a maximum of two bedrooms, but if you’re looking for an easy commute and endless amounts of activities then these apartments will be just right for you.

Dining & Entertainment in Chinatown

All of the Downtown Boston neighborhoods are rich in dining and entertainment, but what makes Chinatown so different is that everything is tied in with rich traditions and culture. A foodie’s paradise; you can enjoy some of the best authentic and diverse tastes from over 200 restaurants in this neighborhood alone. Chinatown gems like China Pearl and Imperial Seafood House are have been acclaimed for their standout flavors, while places like Kam Man Foods sell all kinds of herbs, noodles, and sauces so you can work some kitchen magic of your own.

Chinatown in Boston is also home to many major attractions and annual festivals. Spend an afternoon touring the Freedom Trail, check out a show from the Gund Kwok Asian Women Lion & Dragon Dance Troupe, and keep an ear out for neighborhood events like the August Moon Festival.

Pet Friendly Rentals & Resources

Unfortunately when it comes to pet friendly Chinatown Boston apartments, this area comes up short. Only a select few of the apartments allow pets, and if they do, you are more than likely going to have a pet fee cost associated with the rent. If you are bringing your pets to Chinatown, there is a pet store in the immediate area and approximately two veterinarians in close proximity. There are also several small parks around the neighborhood where you can walk your dog.

Commuting From Chinatown

Public transportation around these parts is pretty darn efficient, and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is the main transportation in the area. There are a number of transit options to not only get you back and forth throughout the city of Boston but outside of the city and state as well. These include the Lucky Star and Fung Wah Buses which can take you to and from New York, and the Yo! Bus which can take you to and from Philadelphia and other surrounding areas. With unlimited transportation options, more than a few bike trails, and a location where errands can be done on foot, owning a car can be a thing of the past.

Chinatown Schools & Education

The amount of families with small children who live in Downtown Boston is pretty slim, and because of the low demand there is only one school near Chinatown. This is Josiah Quincy Elementary School and goes to grade five. If your kids are of middle school and high school ages, they will need to go outside the area to attend school. There is a Community Charter School of Cambridge that is close to this neighborhood, but it is not considered a Boston public school. The education system of the state of Boston is overall ranked high but if you’re looking for more options immediately within the area, those options are very limited.
