Transforming from its humble Irish Catholic origins, the South Boston neighborhood has been experiencing steady growth from the droves of young professionals and families who are migrating to the area. With its rich heritage and low crime rates, South Boston is filled with residents who put their hearts and souls into making sure the neighborhood is a tight-knit community. But with all the amenities of living in South Boston, it’s no wonder so many people have been jumping on the bandwagon. With miles of local beaches, plenty of family-friendly activities, and a quick commute to downtown Boston, this neighborhood is a relaxing escape from the fast pace of inner-city life.
As a general guideline: rent for a studio apartment in South Boston averages $2000-$2500 per month. One bedrooms run between $2500-$3000, two bedrooms between $3000-3500, and three bedrooms from $3500 and up plus deposit and utilities. Even though crime isn’t much of a concern in this area, most of our South Boston apartments for rent are located in secured buildings with controlled access. Included in that large price tag are community amenities like dog runs, community pools, gardens, game rooms, concierge services, grilling areas, and fitness centers.
With all the new buyers and renters in town, the restaurants and bars in South Boston had to really step up their game. With new places popping up every day, restaurants in the neighborhood cover a diverse range of cuisines including everything from French to Mexican, Japanese to, of course, fresh caught seafood. And if you’re looking for a way to forget the work week or end the night, there are all sorts wine bars and unique cocktails menus to choose from throughout South Boston.
For a more adventurous outing, there are tons of attractions in Boston that are definitely worth checking out. Catch a game at Fenway Park, take a boat trip around Boston Harbor, visit the John F. Kennedy library, or tour the Boston Museum of Fine Art. South Boston itself is home to the South Boston Speedway, Carson Beach, and the Strandway, so you don’t have to go far for a variety of exciting activities.
Finding a home for you and your pet should be no problem, as most of the South Boston apartments for rent allow both dogs and cats. Renting with a pet can sometimes be a pain in the you-know-what, but many rentals in the neighborhood make it easier by offering pet runs and designated outdoor spaces for animals. South Boston has a large selection of local pet stores, including Massachusetts BYOD Dog Wash, D'tails Pet Boutique, and Bark Place; plus the local Bark Park, Peter's Park Dog Run, and Carlton Court Dog Park offer plenty of space to exercise your furry friend in a place created just for them. For those annual check-ups, there are a ton of local options ranging from animal hospitals to private veterinary care to choose from.
Put away those car keys, because South Boston is very well served by public transit. The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority has many bus stops throughout the area and buses that run to downtown Boston regularly. The Red Line light rail connects South Boston to the University of Massachusetts, Harvard, and MIT. If you’re traveling out of town, train access through Amtrak is available at several places in the neighborhood. There are even ferries that visitors, workers, and students can use to get to and from many locations in and around Boston. For those that do still prefer to be behind the wheel, highway 58 and highway 70 are your quickest routes in and out of South Boston.
There are many different public school districts that serve the neighborhood of South Boston, and the area you live in will dictate which zone you fall under. Boston Public School District serves the greatest area of the community, and the schools in South Boston are highly regarded by the community. There are also several private schools, charter schools, and Catholic schools to choose from. While the local schools are known for testing well and providing a great education, we always recommend talking to other parents and doing your research to find the school that is right for your little scholar.
