Founded on the land that was originally colonized by Captain Wollaston in 1625, the area was then known as Mount Wollaston. The region was later renamed as Merry Mount under rule of Thomas Morton. By 1640, the area was resettled and incorporated as the town of Braintree, named after the English town with the same name.

Many significant figures in history have made their mark in Braintree. The town is the birthplace of two presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. John Hancock and General Sylvanus Thayer were also born in the region. Thomas Watson, the co-inventor of the telephone retired to Braintree, and the town is also the site of the infamous 1920 murders of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Today, the vast history of Braintree can be visited to this day. The South Braintree Town Center walking path winds through unique architecture and historical landmarks in south Braintree. The East Braintree Waterfront offers visitors breathtaking views of the Weymouth Fore River along the coast.
