Overview of Charlestown

Boston's second-oldest neighborhood of Charlestown is nestled on the northern banks of the city's famous harbor and is one of the fastest-growing communities in the city. This quaint Irish-American neighborhood is home to significant historical landmarks and its own Naval yard, but has been attracting a new wave of immigrants and young professionals because of its fantastic local restaurants and storefronts in the city square. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Suffolk County has grown in recent years to an estimated population of more than 730,000 residents, making Charlestown apartments for rent a much sought-after amenity in the Boston area.

Living in Charlestown, MA

Thomas Graves came to the Charlestown area as early as 1629 to lay down the town plan for a group of English settlers. The city grew steadily in population until the Revolutionary War, when the Battle of Bunker Hill caused the oldest section of Charlestown to burn to the ground. Nevertheless, the city didn't waste any time rebuilding and began to be known as the the area's go-to area for the maritime industry due to its many wharves, ideal bay-area location and stunning Naval yard.

From the 19th to 20th centuries, the city's population quadrupled due to a rapid influx of western European immigration to major cities like Boston. Although the closing and redevelopment of the Naval yard delivered a blow to the Boston economy in recent decades, the city has seen a recent revival due to its historical homes and thriving small business scene.

Charlestown Attractions and Special Events

One of the most hallowed places in the Boston area, the Bunker Hill Monument, is also one of Charlestown's most visited. Part of the community since 1823, the 221-foot-tall granite obelisk honors the many men who fell to British troops in Charlestown in 1775, and is now a National Historic Park.

Nicknamed "Old Ironsides," the U.S.S. Constitution has had its home in the waters near Charlestown since 1797, and remains undefeated in battle to this day. Refurbished after an inspirational poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes raised funds for her repair, this boat is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
