Living in Gardner, MA
The quaint community first established as a town in 1764, became incorporated in 1785 after the towns surrounding it gave the settlers land grants. More people began to migrate to Gardner, and by 1805, it became a known center for the furniture and lumber industries. Over the years, the town eventually became the main spot in New England for people to make and purchase furniture, which is why it is known today as "Chair City" and "The Furniture Capital of New England."
Gardner is the home of one of the most well-known furniture production companies in the country, Heywood-Wakefield furniture. To this day, the company makes some of what furniture enthusiasts believe to be valuable collectibles.
Gardner Attractions and Special Events
This tight-knit town offers a number of family-oriented activities each week, especially in the summer. Each summer, families are invited to gather with other members of the community for events that feature live music and games, family movie night in the park, classic car shows, walking tours and block parties.
There are several hiking, biking and walking trails that hug the coast of Crystal Lake, one of the city's most beloved spots for community members and out of towners to hang out.
