Overview of Holyoke

Holyoke, where the motto is "industry and abundance" because of its influence in local industry, is one of the most popular places to live in western Massachusetts. Located 8 miles north of Springfield and 51 miles west of Worcester, the city is in a convenient location that still offers a unique character, complete with outdoor attractions, an attitude that is very inclusive towards all and heritage events that highlight the city's diversity. An apartment for rent in any neighborhood is your ticket to living a great, active lifestyle in Massachusetts.

Living in Holyoke

In the mid-1800s, the construction of the local canal system and dam paved the way for the paper mills that make up much of the city's industry. The emphasis on the paper industry led to the creation of American Pen and Paper Company in 1888, one of the world's largest office supply manufacturers. Another way in which the canal system that powers paper mills has helped the city is by allowing it to run its electric utility.

With a population of 40,000, this is one of the biggest communities in the Springfield area. It is also one of the most diverse, with a large Irish-American population that hosts the second-largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the country, a growing Puerto Rican population, and a large gay and lesbian population.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy climbing up Mount Tom or East Mountain as well as hiking along the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail. If you're a fan of art, history and culture, head over to the Wistariahurst Museum or Holyoke Heritage State Park.

If you enjoy sports, check out a Holyoke Blue Sox game, held at Mackenzie Stadium. The city is also the birthplace of volleyball, and you'll enjoy paying a visit to the Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Pioneer Transit Authority offers safe, convenient bus service for Holyoke residents and visitors. The Amtrak station is in nearby Springfield.
