Founded in 1630, Medford is one of the oldest English settlements in the United States. In 1637, a bridge was built across the Mystic River to connect Medford with the Boston area to the south. Most of Medford was owned by Matthew Cradock and run as a private plantation until the middle of the 17th century. After a series of land transfers between Medford and surrounding cities, the population grew exponentially from 230 people in 1700 to 18,244 by 1900. Medford was officially incorporated as a city in 1892 as a center of industry for brick, tile, rum and clipper ships. The city has been home to many notable residents over the years, including Amelia Earhart, Fannie Farmer and George Luther Stearns.

Medford is home to Tufts University, ranked by US News as the No. 28 best college in the United States. Tufts is a private university with a diverse student population of close to 10,000 people from all over the world. The two largest businesses in town are Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Cross Country Group, an investment firm with entrepreneurial, technology-enabled service and marketing businesses. Budweiser Company, Courtyard Nursing Care Center, International Silver Company and Medford Cab Company are other top employers here, each offering jobs to more than 250 local residents.
