Overview of Melrose

Located eight miles north of Boston in an area of less than 5 square miles, Melrose is one of the fastest-growing communities in Massachusetts. Combining the easy access to one of the biggest cities in the United States with small-town amenities that are attractive to growing families, many people who live in Melrose apartments for rent enjoy their way of life. With its many exquisite Victorian-era homes and self-sufficient mentality, Melrose embodies the New England personality that makes many Massachusetts residents proud. According to City-Data, the word is out on this charming community, as the median household income here is more than $15,000 more than the state's average, making Melrose one of the most desirable small towns in the state.

Living in Melrose, MA

Melrose was originally part of the Charlestown neighborhood when Boston was first explored and settled. The first explorers, Richard and Ralph Sprague, came into the area as early as 1628. By the mid-1800s, Melrose was connected to the Boston metropolitan area by the Boston and Maine Railroad, and eventually many commuters began flocking into the the town due to its charming atmosphere that was still minutes from everything Boston has to offer. Relics from Melrose's Victorian past are still on display today, as about 40 percent of the homes in the town were built before 1900. Today, the city of Melrose continues to look forward to the future. According to data from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, Melrose is home to more than 26,900 residents, and the number is expected to rise as more people find out about this excellent small town.

Melrose Attractions and Special Events

One of the biggest community events in the city each year is the Melrose Arts Festival, held in the town's historic Memorial Hall each spring. This three-day event features original fine arts and handcrafted items from artists in Melrose and the surrounding areas. Residents can enjoy prize drawings, food and drink, and the opportunity to purchase a local work of art each year at this cherished event.
