Living in Salem, MA
Salem was first established as a fishing settlement on Cape Ann in 1624. The city gained historical significance in 1692 when Reverend Samuel Parris’ daughter and niece fell ill and were believed to be bewitched. The famous Salem Witch Trials resulted in the hanging deaths of 19 individuals suspected of being involved with witchcraft.
In the 18th century, Salem became a major center for fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime trading. The town prospered from international trade with foreign nations, leading Salem to be one of the richest cities in the maritime era. Salem transitioned into a major manufacturing and retail center in the mid-19th century and today is still Massachusetts’ most unique seaside community. Close to one million people visit Salem each year to celebrate the city’s history, arts and seaside attractions.
