A group of English immigrants who left Dorchester seeking land and religious freedom founded Taunton in 1639. At the confluence of three good rivers with clean land and arable soil, the town was named after Taunton, Somerset, England. By 1652, the smelting of bog iron became the area’s first major industry, taking advantage of the plentiful resources provided by local rivers and swamps. Among famous artifacts created here are the anchors for the U.S.S. Constitution and Monitor ships. The metalworking industry flourished through the 17th and 18th centuries and was later joined by shipbuilding as the major contributors to the local economy. Taunton was officially incorporated as a city in 1864.
For centuries, Taunton was the largest city in Massachusetts, originally encompassing almost twice the land area it has today. As the signature event of the Neighborhood Corporation, the Taunton River Festival takes over the Weir Riverfront Park and East Water Street with its various vendors, businesses and non-profit organizations that participate in the festivities. Taunton also features an annual Day of Portugal festival, which is a week-long celebration of Portuguese tradition and the community’s presence in the United States.
