West Springfield is located in a strategic area - where the Connecticut and Agawam Rivers meet. The land surrounding this area was purchased by English explorers in 1636. It was originally called Agawam, and the first construction took place in what is now downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, on the east side of the Connecticut River. The community's name was changed to Springfield in 1640.
Some settlers moved to the west side of the river in the 1650s. The western half of Springfield was incorporated with Agawam and Holyoke in 1774, and the community was named West Springfield.
