Allen Park, MI
Overview of Allen Park
Allen Park, Mich., is in Wayne County, just 13 miles southwest of downtown Detroit and five miles west of the Canadian border. For several years, the city has been a contender on CNN's Best Places to Live list, and Allen Park prides itself for its small-town feel. People looking for Allen Park apartments for rent will find a tight-knit community inside of the Detroit Metropolitan area.
Living in Allen Park, MI
Allen Park was first inhabited by Native Americans, who lived along the banks of Ecorse River. The area was then settled by the French and later German farmers. It was known as the "lazy, farming hamlet" but has come a long way since then. Allen Park was incorporated as a village in 1927 and became a city in 1957. When Henry Ford opened his plant in nearby Dearborn, the city's residents quickly moved away from farming and instead worked on the assembly line.
Today, Allen Park still strives off of Interstate 94 with all Detroit has to offer. It has a population of nearly 28,000. As part of its small town charm, it offers residents a downtown theater, miles of cycling and hiking trails, a historical museum and a community activity center. Residents can also take advantage of all of Detroit's amenities, which include several hospitals and universities, an Amtrak station and the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Allen Park Attractions and Special Events
Perhaps best known for being home to the Uniroyal Giant Tire that towers above Interstate 94, Allen Park is the perfect place for people looking to experience all the Detroit Metropolitan area has to offer. Residents cheer for Detroit's professional sports teams year round and, during the summer, couples and families can enjoy the Ford Drive In in Dearborn. A short trip to Romulus will uncover a day of fun playing paintball, and families can spend a day together across the river at the Canada South Science City.
