Battle Creek, MI
Overview of Battle Creek
Known as "Cereal City" due to its history of food science, Battle Creek has a promising future due to its diversifying economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population is more than 52,000, making Battle Creek the third largest city in the Great Lakes state. Despite its growing popularity among Michigan residents, if you are seeking Battle Creek apartments for rent, you will still find a warm, welcoming community that is on the rise.
Living in Battle Creek, MI
Nearly 175 years ago, a skirmish between a land surveyor and two Native Americans over property resulted in the name of Battle Creek. A small village populated by pioneers for decades, the community had its economic beginnings in prairie farming and milling. After the Industrial Revolution brought about useful farm equipment, the town began to be known for its food processing technology. During the Civil War period, many religious and social reformers made Battle Creek a safe haven for slaves escaping plantations from the South on the Underground Railroad.
By the end of the 19th century, many Quakers from upstate New York moved into the area due to their background in milling, and the city's reputation for producing fine oats became known across the country. Many food production centers were built and Battle Creek became a small manufacturing hub.
In the beginning of the 20th century, two men radicalized the dietary world when they came into the Battle Creek area. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg developed a biscuit made of flaked, baked wheat kernels as a substitute for the traditional meat-driven meal, resulting in the invention of cereal. Soon after, an unemployed businessman W.C. Post competed with Kellogg for America's favorite breakfast food, and the company rivalry continues in the city to this day.
Battle Creek Work and Study
According to Battle Creek's 2011 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the largest employer in the area is Kellogg Company. Although food production still remains the city's bread and butter, the local economy is moving towards aeronautics and the military industry. The Battle Creek Medical Center, Michigan Air National Guard and Duncan Aviation all make up a sizable percentage of the employment in the area. Many Battle Creek rentals are located near Interstates 194 and 94, getting to and from work should come easy for commuters.
There are several institutions of higher learning in the Battle Creek area, including a branch of Western Michigan University. With its convenient downtown location, this college is popular with many students in the community. Recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the top 139 research facilities in the country, this public university attracts residents from all over the state seeking an excellent education. One of the most popular schools with two-year students is Kellogg Community College. This school offers 40 different concentrations and accreditations in a variety of fields.

The market often puts on local events, so going here is a great way to eat healthier and get to know other Battle Creek residents in the community.
