Living in Buchanan

Buchanan was settled in 1833 at the point where McCoy Creek intersects with the St. Joseph River. Originally formed as a village, the city was incorporated in 1858. A marker near the Moccasin Trail makes reference to the fact that many Native American tribes once used the river as a major source of transportation. Fertile soils fostered a thriving farm community that still exists today.

According to 2010 U.S. Census figures, nearly 4,500 people live in the area, typically enjoying reasonable rent and mortgage rates. The National Arbor Day Foundation designated Buchanan as a Tree City U.S.A. due to its abundance of trees lining many streets and commonly traveled routes in and out of the city. If you enjoy nature, the 105-acre Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is found on the eastern bank of the St. Joseph River, and Madron Lake is a popular spot for fishing.

Outdoor enthusiasts won't have trouble finding something to do here. In addition to several walking and hiking trails not far from residential neighborhood areas, the city is also home to the Redbud MX motocross track, which is part of the American Motorcyclist Association National Motocross. Local attractions include the Tin Shop Theatre and Pears Mill, a flour mill dating to the mid-1800s.
