Burton, Mich., is in the eastern region of the state, conveniently located on Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 23. It is approximately 72 miles north of Detroit and five miles east of Flint. Although it started as an agricultural community, it is now a thriving suburban city. Its population is approximately 29,700, according to the United States Census Bureau. Burton was founded by settlers from New York in what is now Genesee County. In 1856, it was organized as a township and named after John Burton, a prominent local farmer. The city was incorporated in 1972.

There are also several higher education opportunities in the county, including Baker University, Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) and Mott Community College. Burton residents can also learn about nature with Burton's extensive park system. The For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum is a 380-acres complex that houses the DeWaters Education Center and the Corydon E. Foot Bird Collection. Residents can golf at two 18-hole golf course and ice skate year-round in the indoor area. Burton's leaders are also very focused on its residents' well-being, and hosts several events throughout the year to ensure their health and safety.
