Clinton Township was originally named “Huron Township” on August 12, 1818, after what was previously called the Huron River. Due to confusion with another Huron river south of Detroit, in 1824 the Michigan Territorial legislature renamed the town and the river after DeWitt Clinton, the Governor of New York from 1817 to 1823 who spearheaded the effort towards building the Erie Canal, which facilitated many settlers’ move to Michigan.
