Dating back to 1701, Dearborn Heights’ story began on the banks of a large river when Detroit was a French settlement. After the construction of railroads in Detroit and its surroundings in the early to mid 1800s, Dearborn Township grew as a storage area for wood for steam locomotives providing jobs for residents of the area.
On June 20, 1960, the Heights voted to become incorporated, but this was after the township lost much of its land. By 1963, the city was officially incorporated and legally named Dearborn Heights with just over 70,000 residents. Today, the family-friendly neighborhood is known as a bedroom community, as most residents travel to Detroit for work.

Since 1986, residents of Dearborn Heights have gathered each summer to celebrate Spirit Fest, a carnival with local vendors, games, live music and family-friendly entertainment. This event is one of many the city holds each year. From the city-wide garage sale, featuring close to 200 booths to the end of the summer chili cook off, residents of Dearborn Heights always have something to do. Since 1992, firefighters from the city have tried their best at making the best chili around and the proceeds are donated to charity.
