Living in Ecorse, MI
Ecorse is named after the Ecorse River. It was originally used as a burial ground for Native American tribes of the area, and was settled by the French in the last 1800s. It was incorporated in the 1820s. Ecorse became a manufacturing giant in the region when its first steel mill, Michigan Steel Mill, began operating in 1923.
Although the steel mill has closed, Ecorse still offers many employment opportunities. Popular jobs include laborers, material movers, assemblers and fabricators. Ecorse residents also enjoy many amenities. They have access to three hospitals that are less than five miles away, three Amtrak stations within 10 miles and several nearby higher education institutions, including University of Michigan, Dearborn, Wayne State University and Henry Ford Community College. The area also offers many extracurricular activities such as the sports leagues through the parks and recreation department and the Ecorse Public Library.
Ecorse Attractions and Special Events
Athletes and lovers of the outdoors enjoy Ecorse's close proximity to many water activities. They compete with the Ecorse Rowing Club on the Detroit River or do other water sports on Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. When residents want the feel of a larger city, they go to Detroit to take advantage of all it has to offer. There, they can see pro sports games, the Detroit Institute of the Arts or test their luck at one of several casinos.
