The largest employers in the area are Botsford Hospital, Farmington Public Schools, Bosch, Quicken Loans and other local companies. Many residents also make their livings in the manufacturing, social assistance and management fields.

The city has experienced price decreases across the housing market, making prices for rentals in Farmington Hills much lower. The average price per square foot is now $74, which is 5.1 percent lower than the previous year. Rentals in Farmington Hills are much more affordable than nearby West Bloomfield. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the median gross rent for Farmington Hills is $917 a month.

The city also hosts an annual event called the Marshmallow Fly and Fry, where the over 1,000 marshmallows that are dropped in Heritage Park are collected by children and traded for other goodies.
