Ferndale was first inhabited by Native Americans and was the site of an Indian Trail that connected Detroit with Saginaw Bay and Mackinac. It was first settled in the 1800s and remained relatively small until the birth of the automobile, when the Ford Motor Company opened in a nearby town. Ferndale was incorporated as a city in 1927.
Thanks to the Downtown Ferndale Development Authority, the town has been revitalized since the early 1980s. It kept its main street charm while making improvements such local retail shops and urban offerings. Recently, it was named to the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) Main Street program. Ferndale was also recognized for its efforts with the NTHP's Great American Main Street Award in 2010.
Ferndale has a small-town feel and its residents serve the community through several civic organizations, including the Michigan Suburbs Alliance, the Ferndale Elks Club and places of worship. Many residents find work in nearby cities and return to peaceful Ferndale at night. Residents have access to three hospitals and an Amtrak station within five miles of the town. They are in close proximity to many institutes of higher education, including University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University.
