In 1798, one of the area's first settlers who made their home in Flat Rock was a French priest name Jean Dilhet. The area continued to grow well into the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to build a headlight plant in the city in 1925, shortly after being incorporated. Today, the city is a rapidly growing community with an industrial past and bright future that lies ahead.

One of the events that many Flat Rock residents look forward to every year is the popular Riverfest held in the fall. With two days of live musical entertainment, car shows, wrestling and boxing demos, a hot dog and watermelon eating contest, and plenty of activities for children, this festival is a great opportunity to get to know your new neighbors.
Another popular attraction for families is the Oakwoods Metropark near downtown Flat Rock. With beautiful woodland hiking, canoeing, horseback riding trails, fishing and butterfly watching, this is the perfect place to get out into nature and have fun with the whole family.
