Grand Ledge is located in central Michigan, approximately nine miles west of the center of Lansing and roughly 91 miles west of Detroit. The city is located on the northwest border of Eaton County and is considered part of the Lansing-East Lansing metropolitan area. The area where Grand Ledge is located today was originally inhabited by the Pottawatomi, Chippewa and Ottawa Indians, who were drawn to large rocks and ledges along the Grand River. The first European settler to arrive to the area was Edmund L. Lamson, who named the area after its sandstone ledges.
The area officially received its name and established a post office in 1850, and a railroad was established in 1869. Grand Ledge was officially incorporated by the state in 1871 and quickly grew into a thriving resort area.
