In 1848, Homer E. Hudson moved from Cleveland and was one of the earliest settlers of the area. He bought land in Georgetown Township from the Jenison brothers and planted a nursery with fruit trees, which spurred the growth of orchards throughout the state. The growth of the town was steady until 1873, when Hudson deeded 20 acres to the community and named it Hudsonville. However, the region was surrounded on three sides by swampy land, which put a damper on development.

By the turn of the century a school, church, general store, lumber mill, barber and other businesses were built. In 1933, Hudsonville was inspired by Chicago’s World Fair and began its first community fair, where products from the community were exhibited, such as poultry, lowland crops, fruit, calves, hunting dogs, needles and fancywork, and canned and baked goods.

Residents living in Hudsonville apartments enjoy the historic Hudsonville Fair every year. This event takes place on a 40-acre site on the west side of the city and boasts antiques and artwork on display, farm produce, canned goods, free entertainment, rides and much more.
