In 1829, Horace Blackman, Alexander Laverty and a local Native American guide followed an Indian trail heading west from Ann Arbor to the land that would become Jackson. Blackman paid $2 an acre for 160 acres of land, successfully registering his claim on the new territory. Blackman and his brother cleared the land and built a cabin a month later under the initial name of Jacksonburg. In 1838, it was shortened to Jackson. Today, Jackson is proud of the lucrative business opportunities available downtown. The city is constantly evolving, having been known over the years as the Rose City, home of the Cascade Falls and birthplace of the Republican Party.
