Living in Kentwood, MI
The first settler to build a house in the area was Barney Burton. He was followed by plenty of New York residents who came farther west to purchase land. A community, originally called Paris Township, was formally organized in 1839.
The small community would see several important historical markers over the next few years. In 1855, the Kent County Agricultural Society purchased some of Paris Township's land to create fairgrounds for county use. The Grand River Valley Railroad came through the town in 1870, creating a way for residents and their goods to freely move about the area. Churches, schools and roads were built to make life easier for a growing number of residents. Parts of Paris Township were annexed over the years, and to prevent further loss of land, the remaining portion was incorporated as Kentwood.
Much has changed in Kentwood since the first settler arrived in the area. With a population of just over 49,000, Kentwood retains its small-town appeal and charm without sacrificing important amenities.
