Residents can choose to earn a degree at the local two-year institution, Muskegon Community College. The school has changed greatly since it opened in 1926, and now offers students multiple degree programs, opportunities to get involved with their peers, and internship programs. Another local higher education option is Western Michigan University's Muskegon campus. Students have the opportunity to participate in certificate programs, as well as earn undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Muskegon has a diverse economy, and strives to attract businesses to the area. Some of the top employers in the city include Mercy General Health Partners, the county of Muskegon, the state of Michigan, Muskegon Public Schools, ADAC Plastics and Johnson Technology.
