Living in Muskegon, MI
Muskegon is an area rich in history. The area was first occupied by nomadic hunters who roamed the area between 7,000 and 8,000 years ago. As nomadic tribes began to form stationary communities, Muskegon became home to numerous Native American tribes. These tribes were undisturbed until French traders first passed through the area in the late 1600s.
By 1820, several trading posts had been established around Muskegon Lake. A township was first organized in 1837, when more settlers began to call the area home. The community began to take advantage of all the natural resources surrounding it, especially lumber. Sawmills and plentiful wood brought the community prosperity, but the town's lumber golden age began to slowly drift away by the end of the 1800s.
Muskegon residents realized they needed to revitalize their community once the lumber industry slowed. A new economic department embarked on a campaign to draw new citizens and industries to the area, and it worked. Huge companies such as Campbell, Continental Motors and the Central Paper Mill were convinced to make the move to Muskegon.
Even though Muskegon's economy has seen its share of ups and downs, it remains a delightful place to live. With just over 38,000 residents, the city manages to retain its small-town atmosphere while providing locals with big-city amenities and a beautiful natural landscape.
Muskegon Work and Study
Residents can choose to earn a degree at the local two-year institution, Muskegon Community College. The school has changed greatly since it opened in 1926, and now offers students multiple degree programs, opportunities to get involved with their peers, and internship programs. Another local higher education option is Western Michigan University's Muskegon campus. Students have the opportunity to participate in certificate programs, as well as earn undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Muskegon has a diverse economy, and strives to attract businesses to the area. Some of the top employers in the city include Mercy General Health Partners, the county of Muskegon, the state of Michigan, Muskegon Public Schools, ADAC Plastics and Johnson Technology.
