The first settlers arrived in Northville from New York state via Plymouth Township in 1825. Alanson Aldrich, Alvale Smith and John Miller are thought to be the town’s first residents and built their houses around the mill that Miller established in town. A tailor, tavern, shoe shop, post office, blacksmith and doctor popped up soon after, allowing Northville to separate itself as its own entity from Plymouth Township.  The town thrived during the Victorian era, when many homes downtown were built in the Queen Anne style. This architecture still stands downtown today, and local residents celebrate the heritage with a city-wide Victorian Festival every year.

In the 20th century, Northville was home to Ford machinery plants that provided valves for every Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicle until 1981. The top employers in town are Northville Public Schools, Northville Downs and Shopping Center Market, which account for many of the jobs held by the 22 percent of Northville residents who work in the education, health and social services industries. The manufacturing industry is also an important contributor to the local economy and employs 20 percent of the population. A whopping 80 percent of people here work in management, sales and office positions. The Buy Michigan Now Festival is a weekend celebration of local Michigan products and ends the state’s annual Buy Michigan Week. With sidewalk sales, street vendors and live music showcasing Michigan-based businesses, the festival continues to grow every year with new sponsors, vendors and volunteers looking to join the movement. Other local favorites include the Victorian Festival and First Friday Experience.

Northville is also home to Northville Downs, a live harness racing and casino venue that has entertained Michigan residents for more than 100 years.
