Overview of Northville

Hailed as a city that is “Timeless with a Twist,” Northville features a charming downtown historic district and lively atmosphere that puts a modern spin on traditional small-town living. Northville is a distinctive community nestled among rolling hills in beautiful countryside with a close proximity to the exciting amenities downtown.  With less than 6,000 residents, the town maintains a close-knit community that can’t be found in most of the other Detroit suburbs. Look for Northville apartments for rent, and find a jewel in the Midwest.

Living in Northville, MI

The first settlers arrived in Northville from New York state via Plymouth Township in 1825. Alanson Aldrich, Alvale Smith and John Miller are thought to be the town’s first residents and built their houses around the mill that Miller established in town. A tailor, tavern, shoe shop, post office, blacksmith and doctor popped up soon after, allowing Northville to separate itself as its own entity from Plymouth Township.  The town thrived during the Victorian era, when many homes downtown were built in the Queen Anne style. This architecture still stands downtown today, and local residents celebrate the heritage with a city-wide Victorian Festival every year.

In the 20th century, Northville was home to Ford machinery plants that provided valves for every Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicle until 1981. Today, Northville residents take advantage of the local opportunities in the Great Lakes region. The area is known for regional and outdoor attractions which residents take advantage of to create a high quality of life for themselves and their families.

Concordia University, Eastern Michigan University, Madonna University and the University of Michigan are all within 21 miles of downtown Northville and offer local students with exceptional higher education opportunities.
