Living in Richmond, MI

The city was founded in the 1830s when a New York family traveled to the area. Erastus Beebe was impressed by the rich soil and a beautiful landscape and wanted to make it his own. He got a land grant signed by President Martin Van Buren and Richmond was born. Construction of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1859 provided people across the country with access to Richmond's lumber and agricultural products, and the area's industry continued to flourish. In 1878, Richmond was incorporated as a village, and the area was incorporated as a city in 1966.

Today, Richmond continues to grow. It is 44 miles north of Detroit and 26 miles southwest of Port Huron. It is linked to the towns by Interstate 94, M-19 and the Gratiot Avenue corridor. It has set itself apart from the big cities by maintaining acres of farmland and scenic landscapes. The Grand Trunk Railroad still runs through Richmond and the city also has access to the ocean liners that travel the nearby Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron.
