In 1763, after being in control of the French the area was handed over to the English and later surrendered to Americans in 1796. The land was fairly level, ideal for farming, and had a heavily timbered portion to the north and spring brooks around the Clinton River. At the turn of the century, Shelby Township was a rural farmland with Utica and Disco on its borders.
In late 1966, voters considered incorporating the down to become the city of Shelbydale, and there were talks of merging the township with Utica a year after. In 1972, the new offices of the township were constructed in close proximity to Disco, which inevitably caused the demise of the village. In 1983, Utica won 347 acres of Shelby Township’s southern land. Today, Shelby Township’s history stays alive through preserved relics such as a local and beloved historic steam locomotive built in 1920.
