Overview of Anoka

Located in southeastern Minnesota, Midwestern charm fuels the streets of Anoka. Hailed as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota provides a picturesque backdrop for the city with an abundance of natural attractions and beautiful landscapes.

The tourism board urges people to “Eat, shop, play and stay” in Anoka, and people from all over the state flock to this classic American small town for some old-fashioned comfort. The city’s 17,000 residents are warm and inviting, adding a distinct local flavor to the area, and making all people feel welcome when they are looking for Anoka apartments for rent.

Living in Anoka, MN

Immigrants first settled on the land north of Minneapolis in 1844, and less than 10 years later, the town had already grown substantially because of the local sawmills used to process the pine logs that were floated into town by the Rum River. The name Anoka came from a combination of two Indian words describing the town’s location on the banks of two rivers and the work surrounding those rivers. Anoka also claims to have provided the first volunteers for the Union Army during the Civil War, when Minnesota Governor Alexander Ramsey offered a regiment after Fort Sumter was attacked.

Anoka is known as a somewhat progressive and political town, after residents elected a 22-year-old mayor and kept him in office for four consecutive terms. The town’s residents are mostly conservative, which is demonstrated in Anoka-Hennepin School District policies.

Anoka Work and Study

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College may be the only institution of higher learning in town, but there are a number of educational opportunities located 21 miles away in the metropolis of Minneapolis. The University of Minnesota and Metropolitan State University have campuses in town and join the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and Vesper College in offering students in the area an unrivaled college education.

A large portion of the Anoka workforce is made up of the production, transportation, manufacturing and material moving industries, which employ many workers in town. As the largest city in Minnesota, Minneapolis also offers many opportunities for those seeking work. The economy here is centered around commerce, finance, rail and trucking services and healthcare, and many major businesses, including the Target Corporation, Ameriprise Financial, PepsiAmericas and Carlson Companies, are headquartered in town. As a hub for industry in the Midwest, Anoka apartments are accessible for everyone.

Rentals in Anoka, MN and Cost of Living

Because of its proximity to Minneapolis, Anoka has a cost of living index score above the United States average. Although it is somewhat expensive to maintain a life here, residents enjoy relatively low rent prices. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the average apartment in Anoka costs around $772 a month. That’s very similar to prices in downtown Minneapolis, leading many people to rent Anoka apartments who want to enjoy the perks of the big city without having to live in it.

Anoka Attractions and Special Events

Anoka is the “Halloween Capital of the World,” because the town hosted one of the first Halloween parades in the early 20th century and petitioned Congress to legally grant the title to the city. Residents here continue to celebrate each year with Halloween parades that have become the most highly anticipated Anoka attractions. There are also numerous festivals throughout the year in Minneapolis, including the Minnesota Fringe Festival, .EDU Film Fest and Twin Cities Pride Parade.
