Overview of Burnsville
A pretty, rambling neighbor to the Twin Cities, Burnsville is a thoroughly Minnesotan community, marked by ample natural resources and the occasional hot dish. With easy access to the state’s cultural centers to the north as well as its rural charm to the south, Burnsville is right at the crossroads of charm and convenience.
People looking for apartments for rent in Burnsville will find that the community’s many amenities are suited to a range of lifestyles. The town’s residents can enjoy a quiet atmosphere while at the same time being close to diverse shopping and convenient transportation.
Living in Burnsville, MN
Once the stomping grounds of Dakota Indians, whose leader, Black Dog, is immortalized by a lake bearing his name, this patch of land on the south side of the Minnesota River was historically home to a small farming community. The construction of the Burnsville Center mall and Interstate 35 sparked rapid growth, helping Burnsville become the community of over 60,000 people it is today.
With its effortless access to the Twin Cities, as well as to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, Burnsville is a perfect departure point for commuters, but its wide range of attractions makes it a great place to stay in its own right. Bodies of water like Crystal Lake make the town feel refreshingly secluded, while nearby entertainment options abound, particularly at the Burnsville Center mall and its many surrounding businesses. People looking for apartments in Burnsville, with both its expanding downtown and spread out neighborhoods, will find the town a place worth settling into.
Burnsville Work and Study
Conveniently situated at the junction where Interstate 35 splits into 35W and 35E, Burnsville naturally feeds into both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, making it a popular home for commuters to both cities. Although Burnsville has no colleges or universities of its own, the Twin Cities area is home to a large number of private and public institutions, including the University of Minnesota.
The town’s largest employers are its own school system and Fairview Ridges Hospital. Goodrich Sensor Systems, Northern Tool and Equipment and Pepsi all have facilities in Burnsville as well.
Rentals in Burnsville, MN and Cost of Living
Given its tradition as a commuter town, Burnsville is not particularly oriented toward rental properties, which keeps prices relatively high. Downtown development efforts have expanded the rental stock, though, adding a number of modern, desirable rental options. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the median gross rent from 2008-2010 was $906. Additional research showed one bedroom apartments renting for around $720 to $1200.
Burnsville Attractions and Special Events
No Minnesota town is complete without a lake or two, and Burnsville has several standouts. The park-heavy community is home to the southern end of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, a destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts that includes Black Dog Lake, while Crystal Lake provides a destination for recreational lake use. In addition to the many parks in Burnsville itself, the town is also close to the Minnesota Zoo in neighboring Eagan. And for those who prefer their outdoor recreation with slow and slopes, the town is home to Buck Hill, one of the otherwise flat region’s only downhill skiing destinations and the training ground of many successful competitive skiers.
Burnsville offers a range of cultural amenities, beginning with the shopping options at Burnsville Center, a major regional mall that also features numerous restaurants, a movie theater and a mini golf course. Truly die-hard shoppers can also head to the nearby Mall of America. Other nearby attractions include Mystic Lake Casino and Valleyfair Amusement Park. Efforts to develop Burnsville’s downtown in recent years have resulted in a crop of new businesses and the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, a state-of-the-art theater, rehearsal and gallery space. Art lovers will also appreciate the convenient access to the world class cultural offerings in nearby Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Each year, Burnsville hosts the Burnsville Fire Muster, a fire truck parade and community festival with food, drinks and entertainment that lasts several days.
