Living in Coon Rapids comes along with a lot of snow and cold, and residents are acclimated to the frigid weather. But because of the large amounts of snow, outdoor winter recreation is easily accessible. Activities range from cross-country skiing, sledding or ice skating in Coon Rapids.
Living in Coon Rapids, MN
Created by the construction of a dam, Coon Rapids was once a city of dirt roads, no electricity, and a separate government entity. In 1847, the federal government surveyed the land and found a well traveled road running through Anoka County, which is believed to be one of the oldest roads in this area of the country.
The first industry in the area was agriculture, with local farms ranging from 90 acres to 600 acres. In 1881, the first non-agriculture industry, a brick yard, was opened near the old City Hall location. The area is a testament to what the brick industry did for Coon Rapids and is now known as the Clay Hole.
In 1912, construction began on a dam below the Coon Creek Rapids, and within a year a small city popped up along the Mississippi River. The city name was later shortened to Coon Rapids and it became its own city in 1959. The now quiet suburb is just 25 minutes north of Minneapolis, and is the ninth largest city in Minnesota.

Coon Rapids Attractions and Special Events

This nine-hole golf course is challenging because of its several water hazards, but is beautifully lined with trees and 75 bunkers for a relaxing getaway.
