Overview of Eagan

Minutes south of the Twin Cities, Eagan is dotted with lakes in a way that shouts classic Minnesota charm. A place for hot dishes and cold winters, Eagan enjoys natural beauty and a prime location at equal distances from Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

People looking for apartments for rent in Eagan will enjoy the town’s calm atmosphere and countless parks, while also taking advantage of nearby shopping, entertainment and transit and proximity to one of the country’s most exciting metropolitan areas.

Living in Eagan, MN

Although it no longer holds its former title as “The Onion Capital of the United States,” Eagan is still frequently recognized as being one of the country’s best places to live. Founded in 1860 and named for its first board of supervisors chairman, Patrick Eagan, the community remained a small farming town until the 1950s, when interstate construction helped it become a more suburban locale. Rapid population growth in the following decades brought Eagan to its present size of just over 64,000 residents.

Due to its convenient proximity to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, Eagan was once the home of Northwest Airlines and it remains blessed with easy transportation access. The city maintains global perspective as a landing spot for area visitors and home to a major Thomson Reuters office. Filled with parks and lakes, it is serene and quiet. Rentals in Eagan provide access to natural beauty, friendly culture and many nearby attractions.

Eagan Work and Study

Perfectly situated along Interstates 35E and 494, Eagan heads straight into Minneapolis and Saint Paul, making it a popular home for commuters to both cities. In addition to serving as home to local campuses of colleges like Argosy University and Rasmussen College, Eagan is close to a large number of private and public institutions in the Twin Cities area, including the University of Minnesota.

Although many residents choose to work in the Twin Cities, Eagan has a number of major employers, including Thomson Reuters, whose local campus is the company’s largest office. Blue Cross Blue Shield also provides a significant source of employment for the city, while Coca-Cola Midwest Bottling and Ecolab both have large facilities in Eagan. The nearby airport also helps bolster the distribution industry, and both UPS and the USPS employ a number of people in Eagan.

Rentals in Eagan, MN and Cost of Living

Given its strong commuter base and traditionally healthy economy, Eagan is not particularly oriented towards rental properties, which keeps prices relatively high.

U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the median gross rent from 2008-2010 was $920. Additional research showed one bedroom apartments renting for around $675 to $1290.

Eagan Attractions and Special Events

As a popular lodging destination for visitors coming to the nearby airport, Eagan has developed a reputation for fun attractions. The city is adjacent to the Mall of America, providing residents with an enormous wealth of shopping, dining and entertainment options, while the nearby Minnesota Zoo also offers a compelling diversion. Within Eagan is Cascade Bay, Minnesota’s largest outdoor municipal water park, which features a wide range of water attractions and activities like miniature golf. Eagan also is home to The Blast, a soft-play area for children, and a civic ice arena for hockey and skating fans. In addition to these local amenities, Eagan residents also have convenient access to the world class cultural offerings in nearby Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Like any good Minnesota town, Eagan is filled with lakes, and the city’s many parks provide residents with the ability to get outside and relax. Fishing is a popular activity, and the city’s designated lakes provide access to fishing within a mile of most Eagan homes. In the summer, the city hosts numerous festivals and outdoor activities for residents, including the weekly Market Fest series, which features live music, art and local food vendors.
