Overview of Eden Prairie

Living up to Minnesota’s reputation for peaceful lakes and natural beauty, Eden Prairie is one of the Twin Cities’ most idyllic suburbs. Named as the country’s best place to live in 2010 by Money Magazine, the town regularly receives high praise for its quality of life.

People looking for apartments in Eden Prairie will enjoy the town’s many parks and lakes, as well as plentiful shopping, business and entertainment options. With convenient access to one of the country’s most exciting metropolitan areas, Eden Prairie appeals to a wide range of lifestyles.

Living in Eden Prairie, MN

Named for its appearance as Minnesota’s “garden spot” by the writer Elizabeth Fries Ellet, the formal settlement of Eden Prairie stretches back to May 11, 1858, the day Minnesota became a state, when the town board held its first meeting in a log school house. That building is still in use as the main office for the Eden Prairie School District, but, otherwise, especially in the last few decades, Eden Prairie has changed dramatically from its time as a quiet farm village.

Following the construction of Flying Cloud Airport, still in operation for small planes, in 1946 and especially since the 1960s, Eden Prairie has seen tremendous growth. With access to Minneapolis and Saint Paul via Interstate 494 and local commerce driven by the Eden Prairie Center mall, the town has become a popular home to both commuters and residents employed by one of many locally based companies. The 2011 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau placed the local population at just under 62,000, and people looking for Eden Prairie apartments will find a thriving, active and peaceful community.

Eden Prairie Work and Study

Home to Hennepin Technical College, Eden Prairie is a popular place for students seeking education and job skills. In addition to HTC, the town also hosts a campus of ITT Technical Institute and offers an easy commute to a large number of private and public institutions in the Twin Cities area, including the University of Minnesota.

While many residents choose to live in Eden Prairie and work in Minneapolis or Saint Paul, the town is one of the region’s significant employers, boasting the headquarters of companies like grocery retailer and distributor SuperValu, transportation logistics firm CH Robinson, hearing aid manufacturer Starkey and engineering and testing firm MTS Systems. Football enthusiasts will also know it as the headquarters of the Minnesota Vikings. Many residents also find work in the health care industry.

Rentals in Eden Prairie, MN and Cost of Living

With its desirable living conditions and traditionally healthy economy, Eden Prairie is a competitive market for rental properties, which keeps prices relatively high.

U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the median gross rent from 2008-2010 was $1,017. Additional research showed one bedroom apartments renting for around $750 to $1335 per month.

Eden Prairie Attractions and Special Events

Home to more than 1,000 acres of active use parks, 200 miles of sidewalks and trails and 4,500 acres of wetlands, Eden Prairie is rich with natural beauty. Residents can enjoy public beaches, ice skating and athletic facilities as part of the park system, as well as a public observatory featuring one of the largest telescopes in Minnesota. Public events include concerts and plays at the Staring Lake Amphitheater, along with a range of community festivals like the annual Minnesota Festival of Jazz on the Prairie.
