In 1857, James Fergus sent Joe Whitford to find a location for a new community. A Native American family directed him to a site near big waterfalls and rapids. Whitford staked out a town and named it Fergus Falls in honor of his employer. George B. Wright purchased the town in 1870, hoping to create a regional trade center. He built a river dam to power a sawmill that would furnish lumber for the town’s buildings. Fergus Falls became the county seat of Otter Tail County and was officially chartered as a village in 1872.

Fergus Falls hosts an annual Summer Fest, featuring a food and beer garden, battle of the bands competition, street dance event, kirkbride tours and a number of arts & crafts booths. The Fergus Falls Festival of Quilts Show is also here, inviting local quilters to showcase their handmade creations. The festival offers class workshops, mini-seminars and a silent auction.
