In 1857, James Fergus sent Joe Whitford to find a location for a new community. A Native American family directed him to a site near big waterfalls and rapids. Whitford staked out a town and named it Fergus Falls in honor of his employer. George B. Wright purchased the town in 1870, hoping to create a regional trade center. He built a river dam to power a sawmill that would furnish lumber for the town’s buildings. Fergus Falls became the county seat of Otter Tail County and was officially chartered as a village in 1872.
