The area north of Minneapolis was first settled after the construction of the Red River Ox Cart Trail in 1844. John Banfill platted the land, building a general store and saw mill that allowed the town of Manomin to grow quickly. Abram M. Fridley, after whom the city is named, was elected as the first territorial representative of Manomin in 1855. The town split from Ramsey County as the newly-formed Manomin County, and was re-named Fridley by the Minnesota State Legislature in 1879. Today, Fridley is still a home rule charter city and maintains a governing system defined by its own authority rather than that of the state.
