The Kaposia band of the Dakota tribe originally made their summer home in the Little Canada area because of the abundant local fishing and hunting resources. White French Canadian settlers first entered the region in the mid-1800s, and many of their descendents still live in town today. Benjamin Gervais was the first man to claim land here, and the city’s largest lake, Lake Gervais, was named to honor him. Although English is the official language of the United States, the first schools established in Little Canada taught classes in French. Local residents are proud of their Canadian heritage and celebrate each year during the Canadian Days celebration with their sister city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Little Canada’s official symbol is an LC initial on a white fleur-de-lis with a red maple leaf in the background, reminiscent of the Canadian flag.
Just a few miles away from Little Canada, there are a number of university options in nearby Minneapolis and St. Paul. The twin cities are home to the University of Minnesota, Metropolitan State University, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Vesper College, St. Paul College, Macalester College, and the McNally Smith College of Music, among others, that offer students an exceptional education in the Midwest.
For those seeking work, Little Canada has many employment opportunities. The most prominent industries in town are manufacturing and retail trade, encompassing nearly 30 percent of available jobs. Another 17 percent of workers hold jobs in the educational, health and social services industries. Sixty-six percent of people work in management, sales and office occupations in these industries, and join 12 percent in production, transportation and material moving positions in making up the majority of the Little Canada workforce.
With all of the excitement of Minnesota’s twin cities, residents in Little Canada pay somewhat expensive rent prices. United States Census Bureau statistics indicate that the standard Little Canada apartment costs $843 a month, which is $56 more than the Minnesota average. Everyday living expenses are also costly in Little Canada. The city received a cost of living index of 114.5, which is well above the United States average of 100.
Little Canada is home to the Canadian Days festival, an annual event celebrating the local community. Canadian Days aims to provide Little Canada residents with a summer festival, promote stronger ties of friendship between Little Canada and Thunder Bay, Ontario, and to make charitable contributions to local youth-oriented organizations. The three-day event features a swing band, food vendors, LCRA volleyball and kittenball tournaments, carnival rides, a medallion hunt, button prize drawing and Sunday bingo bonanza, among others.
Fans of discus and frisbee will love the Minnesota Disc Sports Hall of Fame, located in town. With Minnesota's continued love of all things disc, this is one quirky stop that all residents need to make at least once.
