Minneapolis MN Cityscape

Marcy-Holmes Minneapolis Overview:

The motto of the neighborhood reads, “Marcy-Holmes is a welcomed mix of old and new, traditional and trendy.” And we have to agree completely. The first neighborhood in Minneapolis, Marcy-Holmes is a friendly residential area by day and a vivacious entertainment district by night. This is mostly due to its close proximity to the University of Minnesota’s main campus—but don’t let that suggest that it’s entirely overrun with students! Like the motto suggests, the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood maintains a balance residents and renters.

The Marcy-Holmes neighborhood is home to Dinkytown, a historical commercial district just Northwest of the U. Dinkytown rentals tend to be a filled mostly with students while outer Marcy-Holmes apartments tend to be rented by young professionals and families. Another perk to this area is that it’s considered to be very social. Many home owners plan fun community gatherings as a way to meet new residents in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood.

Arts & Culture in Dinkytown

Dinkytown is considered to be trendy rather than artsy, however the neighborhood is dotted with museums and galleries that are definitely worth a visit or three. For you modern art fix you can visit the Weisman Art Museum; or if educational taxidermy is more your thing the Bell Museum of Natural History is a fun experience for both kids and adults.

If you have an appetite for unique art and budget to match you can decorate your apartment with goods from one of the many local galleries. Gallery 122; Midway Contemporary Art; Soap Factory; The Film Society of Minneapolis/Saint Paul; and Thomas Barry Fine Arts are favorites among the community.

Marcy-Holmes Dining and Entertainment

Like other areas of MPLS, Dinkytown has a wide variety of ethnic cuisine. Unlike other areas, the neighborhood is revered for its American pub food. One of the good things about having students in an area is that it tends to create more options for affordable food and drink—hence the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood has delectable variety of upscale and inexpensive. Dinkytown is a great neighborhood to live in if you prefer to have walkable options for coffee, food, and drink.

Most of the nightlife in this area is dominated by a younger, hip crowd. A lot of live music comes through this area to popular venues like the Varsity Theater, while cheaper sports bars tend to overflow with students and recent alumni of the university. Families and young professional take advantage of the convenient access to downtown and the more upscale restaurants and bars that Dinkytown has to offer.

Pet Friendly Rentals in Marcy-Holmes

Predictably, the University community doesn’t have many options when it comes to veterinarians and pet stores. But if you venture to the community of Northeast (which to Marcy-Holmes is really just more north than east), you’ll find a variety of trusted pet clinics and local pet stores to choose from. When it comes to outdoor spaces, there are several scenic parks that you and your pup will love to walk to. Additionally, many of our Dinkytown rentals allow for both cats and dogs, which makes finding a pet-friendly apartment in Marcy-Holmes is very simple.

Commuting from Marcy-Holmes Minneapolis

The neighborhood of Marcy-Holmes is considered to be one of the most bike-friendly areas of the city. Because many of the amenities you need are within walking and biking distance, many people that live in the area have no need to leave unless they have a specific errand that requires travel. When it comes to commuting outside of the neighborhood, there are about 19 different bus lines that run through Marcy-Holmes that will take you most anywhere you want to go. Downtown is a very short commute from Dinkytown, so whether you work or play outside of your neighborhood there are ways to get there cheaply and efficiently.

Education Options in Marcy-Holmes:

Until recently, Marcy-Holmes hasn’t been widely known as a place for families with young children. However, the neighborhood has been seeing an increasing population of young families which is probably due to the low crime rate, affordable housing, and highly rated school options in the area. In particular, the Marcy Open School (K-8) attracts families because of the school’s emphasis on learning through the arts.

High school kids have several options for schools, including public, charter, and private programs. Edison High School is the attendance area school for the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, but if you’re interested in researching your options, Pease Academy and Second Foundation are private schools that are also located within the area.
