Living in Minnetonka, MN
Once a sacred thoroughfare for the Dakota Sioux and Ojibwa Chippewa, the headwaters of Minnehaha Creek, which feed into Lake Minnetonka, have a long history of attracting visitors and residents. In the late 19th century Lake Minnetonka became a popular tourist destination, with steamboats and luxurious Victorian hotels lining its streets.
The modern town of Minnetonka stems from a series of mills and development along the creek in the area now known as Minnetonka Mills, as well as from groupings of businesses in what are now the Glen Lake, Groveland and Oak Knoll neighborhoods. Beginning in the 1960s, the sleepy town began to see an influx of residents drawn in by improved bus and highway service to Minneapolis.
Today around 50,000 people call Minnetonka home, according to 2010 U.S. Census data, and the town is busy with the activities of several locally headquartered major companies. Apartments in Minnetonka provide locals with a dynamic community and charming home in nature while at the same time offering easy access to the nearby Twin Cities.
Minnetonka Work and Study
Minnetonka is home to a branch of National American University, and residents can also take advantage of the short commute to the many private and public institutions in the Twin Cities area, including the University of Minnesota.
The town developed as something of a commuter hub, and it offers convenient transportation, including park and ride options and access to Interstate 494. However, Minnetonka is also home to several large companies, and many residents work locally. Among the businesses based in Minnetonka are health insurance company UnitedHealth Group, agricultural supply company Cargill and hospitality company Carlson. Emerson Process Management, Starkey Labs and SuperValu also all provide a number of local jobs.
Rentals in Minnetonka, MN and Cost of Living
