Living in Richfield, MN

Named after the rich farmland in the areas, Richfield grew because of the fertile land between St. Paul and Minnesota. Early crops in Richfield included corn, wheat and oats and many farmers began bringing their most profitable crop, wheat, to St. Paul to sell. In 1908, the area officially became a city and it is now known as Minnesota’s oldest suburb. Since then, the borders of Richfield have changed after three annexations by Minneapolis. In 1905, Fort Snelling shifted the border of Richfield to 34th avenue and in 1941, part of the east side of town turned into the Wold Chamberlain Field municipal airport. By 1955, the airport was separated from the village of Richfield.

Many war veterans came to Richfield in the 1940s and 1950s, raising the population to 10,000 to 42,500 by 1960. The population has since leveled off and maintained fairly stagnant since the early 1990s. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Richfield today is around 35,700.

The area includes a 100-seat outdoor amphitheater, restored prairie, lowland forest, a large picnic area and park trails.

Richfield hosts several annual events year-round, including the Urban Wildland Half Marathon, All-Family Halloween Celebration and Candlelight and Ice, a holiday event.
