The city got its name from local farmer Moses Zimmerman, a resident from the early 1900s who was influential in promoting the idea of the Great Northern Railroad coming through the community to spur economic growth. Originally called the Village of Lake Fremont, the city absolved to change its name in 1967. Described as the "Gateway to the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge," people have been drawn to the community for its beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities. Residents were attracted to the area for its great schools, since the census indicates that the average family size is around 3.5, and only 6.3 percent of the people living here are below the poverty line.
Zimmerman Attractions and Special Events
Every year, the community of Zimmerman comes together to put on Wild West Days, a weekend-long event with food, music, and live entertainment for the whole family. Complete with a carnival, parade, talent contest, soap box derby, pony and camel rides, softball tournament, concerts and fireworks, it is no surprise that so many Zimmerman residents look forward to this popular event. What makes this festival even better is that proceeds go to provide community aid to the local volunteer fire department.
