Overview of Long Beach

Once known as the Radish Capital of the World, Long Beach was originally home to a number of farmers and fishermen. As part of Harrison County, this Mississippi town is around 30 minutes away from both Biloxi and Gulfport. Many of the buildings in town are newer and more modern due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed most of its buildings. Apartment renters looking for new and affordable housing will find plenty of options in this city.

Living in Long Beach

Early residents living in Long Beach owned farms and worked together as a loose community. During the early part of the 20th century, the area was established as a town and became well known for the radishes grown by local farmers. As the popularity of radishes decreased, locals turned to fishing and other industries for their livelihood.

The majority of buildings in town suffered significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The federal government awarded the town money to rebuild, and as residents began rebuilding and moving back to the neighborhood, the population reached more than 14,000 residents.

Some of the attractions in Long Beach appeal more to college apartment renters, including the Friendship Oak. Local legend says that couples and groups who take photographs under the tree will remain together forever. Historians believe that the tree is more than 500 years old. Also popular with younger residents is the Acme Fun Center, which has arcade games, batting cages and other fun activities and games.

Apartment renters looking to have some fun and maybe make a little money flock to the nearby Island View Casino Resort. Many neighborhoods in Long Beach are also close to the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum. This unique museum focuses on the history of the region and its connection to the seafood and fishing industries. Built in 1986, it is home to many exhibits that detail the impact that hurricanes had over the years on locals and local businesses. Rent time on an authentic Biloxi schooner to get an inside look at how locals worked in the past.

Due to its small size and the layout of the city, Long Beach does not operate any form of public transportation. There is a Greyhound station that serves as a depot to other destinations in the state and across the country, and most residents who rent a neighborhood apartment use their personal vehicles to get around.

Apartments in Long Beach-Study

There are two colleges located within the city limits: The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. MGCC offers two-year degree programs and technical courses designed for those who want to go right to work while USMGC focuses on traditional four-year programs. Depending on the neighborhood where you choose to rent an apartment, you might find yourself close to the Miller-Mote Technical College campus.

Apartments in Long Beach-Work

Much of the early success of the town relied on fishing and maritime companies, but those job opportunities fell out of favor during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The top employers in the city are now the Long Beach School District, Bay Technical Associates Incorporated and the Keesler Air Force Base, which is less than 20 minutes from the city.
