Overview of Pascagoula

Serving as the county seat of Jackson County, Pascagoula, MS, is in close proximity to three other significant cities within the same county: Gautier, Moss Point and Ocean Springs. It's also within driving distance of cities near the Alabama border, including Mobile. The city's name, literally meaning "bread eater," comes from the name of a group of Native Americans that once lived along the Pascagoula River. While the city is within a highly industrialized region of the state due to its prime location by the river, it still retains a certain rural charm that makes it an attractive place to rent or own personal or business property, with homeowners and apartment renters often enjoying reasonable rates when compared to rates in larger Mississippi cities like Jackson and Gulfport.

Living in Pascagoula

While what became Pascagoula was inhabited as early as the mid-1500s, the first permanent settlers in the region were Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, a colonist and governor of French Louisiana, and his aunt. The region changed hands over the years, under French, English and Spanish control at various periods until the early 1800s when it became a settlement within the Mississippi Territory and part of the United States, becoming a city in 1901. Pascagoula merged with the nearby town of Scranton in 1912.

According to 2010 U.S. Census figures, nearly 23,000 people call the city home. Despite sustaining extensive damage during Hurricane Katrina, the region has made significant steps towards recovery, with many commercial and residential neighborhood areas fully restored and rebuilt.

As part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the city provides many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts who rent in the area. Krebs Lake is a popular spot for boating and fishing. The region is also noted for having one of the most well-preserved ecosystems in the nation, providing plenty of spots for nature lovers to take in the sights. Sports fans in the area tend to support local high school and college teams like the Ole Miss Rebels and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

There is no public transportation available in the neighborhood, but apartment renters tend to navigate the Jackson County area by car. Highway 90 runs east-west through town and connects with Interstate 10, gateway to Biloxi, Mobile and New Orleans.

Apartments in Pascagoula-Study

Apartment renters with school-age children are served by the Pascagoula School District, which includes several neighborhood elementary schools. The city also has a handful of private schools, including Resurrection Catholic School and Gateway Christian Academy in nearby Moss Point. If you're looking to rent an apartment in or around the city with easy access to respected higher learning facilities, your choices include Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College-Jackson County Campus, Tulane University in New Orleans, the University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Park Campus and the University of South Alabama, about 42 minutes away by car in Mobile.

Apartments in Pascagoula-Work

Apartment renters looking for work in the area should be able to find a variety of entry-level, skilled labor or management positions in and around the city. Pascagoula is home to Ingalls Shipbuilding, the largest employer in the entire state. Other leading employers in the area include Signal International and Mississippi Phosphates. Chevron also operates several refineries throughout the region.
